The Pilansberg Gathering!
|
1. What to Take |
Because you spend 2 nights in the park, the basic camping gear is required. eg. tents, sleeping materials, tables, chairs, food etc..
Food - A campfire is made both nights and the norm is braai's but you can bring your own gas bottle to cook privately if you so wish. No fires, other than the main campfire, are allowed because of the threat of fire spreading into the bush, especially in winter.
Clothing - You can bring any clothing you want. All FOPS requires from you during the actual work on Saturday morning is a FOPS shirt (which can purchased in camp). We suggest that you wear long trousers, as there are many unwelcome guests that enjoy warm areas while you work in the bush. Wear old shoes for the work, as some of the working conditions (eg. Waxing hides) end up being pretty messy.
Other - If you can, bring a packet of fire-wood to the work-party. You need a chair and any beverage you prefer. Binoculars, Camera etc. |
| 2. Agenda |
Arrive Friday afternoon. Friday night is normally just a relaxing night at the campfire.
Saturday morning - Awake early, Briefing around the campfire about the days required work. All groups make their way to the their relevant work areas.
Saturday afternoon & night - Relax and enjoy the reserve after a hard morning's work. The rest of the weekend is up to you.
Sunday - Everyone is required to have left camp by 14h00pm |
| 3. Park Rules |
Pilansberg - You need to arrive at Manyane gate before the gate closing time. Tell the guard at the gate that you are going to FOPS. They will give you a sign-in form to sign and you will receive a Gate pass. Use this pass to enter & exit the park at your will throughout the weekend. These cards need to be given back to your workparty leader before you leave on Sunday. |
| 4. Camp Rules |
Work parties are by invitation only this is to keep the group working Harmoniously You may not just attend a workparty.
Non Fops members may attend 3 work parties before having to join Fops, They must contact the contact person or if going with FoPS friends they must do the contacting.
At least one vehicle (of a group) parked in the park must have a magnetic sticker on it indicating that it is an official work party. Or the park staff, normally HO's during a week end, are obliged to investigate.
Workparty members should attend one workparty in each of the parks per year. Encouraging cross-pollination of ideas and preventing polarization as has happened in the past.
Everybody must have an indemnity form on file.

| 6. Directions |
If you are coming from JHB/PTA head for Sun city. The best way is to go through Hartebeespoort, head on the Rustenburg highway (N4), and then take the Pilansberg/Sun City turnoff. From this turnoff, the Pilansberg park is approx. 80 km's. Head straight on this road, go through 2 four way stops.
When you get to the 3rd fourway stop (a big GOLDEN ERA sign on the right corner), turn right towards Northam.
You then continue with the Pilanesberg on your left for about 28Km, you will start to see a microwave tower in the distance, that is where you will turn. Just past the tower there is a turn to the left to Mogwase. Take this turn.
Follow this road to the other side of Mogwase. You will pass though a stop street. Go for another 2 km or so until you get to another 4-way stop where there is a petrol station diagonally across from you, turn right here.
Then first left ( about 150m ) into the Manyane gate.
At the first boom gate, just mention that are going to FOPS.
Proceed straight on crossing a 4 way stop sign to the gate, where you will need to get your FOPS visitors card from the assistant. Just tell them you are from FOPS, you will need to sign in your registration etc..
After entering the park itself take the first turn to the right ( it’s actually more like don’t take the left turn. If you find yourself on a brick road you took the wrong road. ).
Take the next turn to the left, Potokwane way
After twisting about a bit you will come to a sign that says ‘no entry management road’ on the right follow this road for about 200 Meters where you will come to the gate of the camp. Some one must get out to slide the gate open and close it again ( first checking for dangerous animals ) be careful not to touch the electric fence.
If you come to a ‘T’ junction you have missed the turning.
